meeting-2010-06-12

Today there was Rob, Tony, Mike and Les present.

It was a mixed discussion today, not much computer time, made a nice change.

Rob brought in his Gigabyte Tablet PC, and showed us Meego http://meego.com/
Meego is a really good operating system and shows great promise, we'll keep an eye on this ;)

We discussed various topics today

  • ICT in schools, and how to hide a mouse inside a PC
  • Crisp packets, are they better than heat sinks?
  • Linux in schools, how can we get Linux into schools? Microsoft has such a dominance from the cradle to the grave, if we get Linux into schools then we stand a good chance that the next generation of users will be free software users
  • 10MB hard drives http://bit.ly/tYbAU

We also had a brief chat about Barcamp Blackpool.
Tony, Rob, Rick and Les will be attending and promoting Ubuntu to the attendees. At our meeting on the 26th June we will go into more detail.

meeting-2010-06-05

Well it was just the three of us today, Mike, Les and myself (Tony).

A very un Linux meeting today as I hogged the meeting trying to work out why I could not install Windows XP onto a Lenovo Core 2 Duo E7300 with 2gig DDR3 Ram and a 160Gig HDD. after nearly 2 hours of trying and knowing all the hardware worked as it would install Linux OK we came to the conclusion that the mother board configuration needs Windows Vista or Seven to work. WinXP just does not have the driver set needed to recognise the SATA HDD or DVD Rom for the install. and no legacy IDE channel to fit an IDE Hard disc.

That's me off to buy a copy of Vista Business or Windows 7 to get it up and running with that funny Redmond OS so I can flog the thing. Other option is to advertise it as a working base unit with Linux installed to prove it. And someone can install their OS of choice onto it.

Tony
