A new user signed up with the computer club last week, and before coming to pick up her free computer, she called in at the Carphone warehouse and signed up for mobile broadband with '3'. The 'dongle' was free with a two year contract at £15 month. She had been told that activation would take up to 48 hours.
The installation software is built into the device, just plug it into a USB slot, it installs itself ready for use.
We installed it on the bench, and it immediately started working, she was "over the moon".
Our workshop is like a concrete bunker, and many mobile phones can't get a signal inside, but the device worked with good signal strength and decent speed.
This technology is going to be ideal for people who move house/flat a lot or do not want a landline as it avoids the hassle of requesting MAC codes and trying to migrate a landline based system to a different provider.

A club member came in yesterday with his computer desktop covered in MP3 files which he could not remove.
He had bought an external USB drive and had been experimenting with backing up music for his DJ business.
The MP3 files could be deleted from the desktop, but when the machine restarted, all the files reappeared. All the file names began with 'copy of'. The external drive did not need to be attached for this to happen.
After checking that no synchronisation software had been installed with the external drive software, to synchronise with another folder on the machine, a search for all MP3's (*.MP3) on the desktop revealed that there were 2500 MP3's.
The files visible on the desktop were actually being deleted from the desktop, but after a restart, the remaining ones took their place. Because all the file names looked similar, this was not noticed.
